In Pursuit of Excellence... YROP enjoys a great reputation for striving to reach the pinnacle of success in every aspect of programs and services. This year’s goals continue to dovetail with our on-going ideal as we focus on aligning YROP curriculum standards to the math and language arts standards, as well as to the High School Exit Exam. Curriculum Workshops are set for October 9, 2001 (Industrial Technology/Agriculture), October 16, 2001 (Business/Home Ec) and October 23, 2001 (Health & Public/Human Services). All workshops will be held at the Stanislaus County Office of Education (4:00 - 8:00 p.m.). Workshop leaders are experts in their fields. Diane Waterman, Oakdale High School math instructor, spearheaded the successful alignment of twelve industrial technology courses during the last school year, and will lead the Math Workshops again. Debra Boggs will lead the Language Arts Workshops. Debra, currently the Program Manager for Project LEAD, in SCOE’s Career Education Office, has taught language arts for seven years at Oakdale High School. If you have not received your registration flyer or have a question, call Cindy Young, SCOE, 525-5090. In Celebration of Excellence...
YROP’s continuing quest for excellence was highlighted at the Spring CAROC/P Northern Central Chapters Conference held at Lake Tahoe when each district recognized their best of the best. This year’s YROP honorees are literal "bookends" as described by their nominators. Carl Schafer, Construction Technology instructor at Riverbank High School, was selected as the 2001 Outstanding ROC/P Teacher of the Year. Carl has been teaching ROP Construction Technology for over 20 years. During this time, countless students have learned the construction trade and gone on to find employment in the construction industry. The reputation Carl brings to the campus is impeccable. Over the past two years, he has taken on a project which has drastically affected his program. With the framing of a house nearly completed, he began a remodeling project in which a house would be used as the Healthy Start building. The successful completion of this additional project was a great (and challenging) learning experience for Carl’s students who worked with state architects, building codes, and engineers to prepare the structure for student use. Great job, Carl! The 2001 Outstanding ROC/P Support Staff honoree is Priscilla Faria, Student Records Technician, Yosemite ROP. Among her other achievements, Priscilla streamlined and reduced instructor time in taking ROP attendance. She has been instrumental in developing surveys to assist in the completion and accuracy of the Carl Perkins data required by the California Department of Education. This task alone has made her indispensable to the Yosemite ROP. Priscilla’s professionalism, eagerness to tackle difficult tasks to successful conclusions, and her willingness to go the extra mile to assist administrators and instructors make her invaluable to Yosemite ROP. Thanks for your outstanding work, Priscilla!
