For current 09-10 year PT's, Formal Observations are on an
as needed basis only. The information below is for
those in BTSA prior to the 08/09 induction revision.
The induction
program requires that each participating teacher schedule a
formal observation with the induction program staff after the
completion of the All Kids Institute. A form is included that
must be mailed in to program staff to schedule the
observation. Trained observers will spend one to two hours in
a candidate’s classroom to collect evidence designed to verify
that certain teacher practices and appropriate environmental
conditions are in place. The observer will require a lesson
plan prior to the observation and that lesson plan must
include a sketch of the classroom with information about the
students listed. If a candidate copies a lesson from an
adoptive textbook program, he or she should add notes
signaling what portion of the lesson will provide evidence of
differentiated instruction. Those writing lesson plans from
scratch should make note of differentiated instruction as
well.
Information about
that classroom sketch follows. Please be sure to draw the map
from the perspective of the observers’ location in the room
and not from the front of the room where the participating
teacher stands. The observers will report the results of the
formal observation to the participating teacher and the
program using the: Formal Observation, Synthesis of Findings
form.
This observation
may be repeated as necessary to allow participating teachers
to alter and revise the environment and their teaching
practices so that the observers can verify that all elements
are in place in the classroom. Should a repeat observation be
necessary, program staff will provide additional resources to
help the candidate prepare and add new or improve current
practices in his or her repertoire.
