Welcome to Foothill
Horizons! As the classroom teacher you have a very important
role in the Outdoor School program. This page is designed to
help you to become acquainted with our program and your role
during the week. We have included information you will need to
prepare your students before they come, as well as follow-up
activities for extending the concepts of outdoor education back
in the classroom.
Your enthusiasm and
involvement in the program directly correlate to your students’
successful experience. The program has been designed with a
great deal of flexibility to encourage the tailoring of your
week’s experience to your classroom studies. Your naturalist
will be more than willing to adjust the lessons to your
individual needs. Your direct involvement as instructor will
also be welcomed to any degree you wish.
The program at Foothill
Horizons is correlated to the California State Science Standards
and is designed to give the students first-hand experiences in
discovering the outdoor world. It is also intended to excite
and motivate students for further investigations after leaving
the Center. We believe that through observation and discovery,
the students will learn to question and reason for themselves.
We want you to feel
comfortable here. Here are some words from travelers down the
same path:
“This was my
first time to Foothill Horizons as a teacher and all of the
staff made themselves completely available to me. At first I
was a little hesitant to ask for help or assistance. People
were friendly and patient with me. I felt comfortable talking
to anyone on staff.”
Erin
Bartholomew, Enslen School, February 2002
“Everyone
here is so supportive and helpful. Your staff truly
“practices what they preach.”
Marlene Cordova, Lakeshore School, March 2002
“I love
how everyone here goes the extra mile to be accommodating for
us. I leave here feeling refreshed and happy. The best part of
my year as a teacher is my week here!”
Dana Haynes, Wilson School, February 2002
