Visual and Performing Arts

The Stanislaus County Office of Education Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Program is proud to offer a Visual Arts Integrated Curriculum for Kindergarten through Sixth grades. Designed with the general education teacher in mind, the curriculum is broken down into grade-level specific curriculum books. Each curriculum book includes 10 hands-on, arts-integrated lessons aligning to California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and California Visual Arts Standards. When appropriate, the lessons also integrate Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, and California Social Studies Content Standards.

Each grade-level curriculum book includes:

• 10 hands-on, visual art lessons integrating CA Common Core State Standards for ELA & CA Visual Arts Standards
• At least 1 lesson integrating writing
• At least 1 STEAM lesson
• At least 2 lessons integrating Next Generation Science Standards
• At least 1 lesson integrating CA Social Studies Content Standards
• Written and visual directions for completing each lesson
• Access to downloadable PowerPoint presentations for each lesson
• 2 rubrics for assessing student work

Overview

Stanislaus County Office of Education is a 2018-2019 recipient of a $1 million CDE Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) grant(link is external). The SCOE SSAE grant is a project called, Equitable Access to Arts Learning for Students (EquAALS). The purpose of the EquAALS project is to rigorously utilize research-based art integration strategies to enhance the achievement and cognitive growth in English Language Arts of Students with Disabilities (SWD) through a professional development (PD) module for Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade teachers of SWD. Participating teachers receive a kit of materials to put the PD strategies into place in their classrooms, and a $200 stipend for completion of the module.

What does the EquAALS professional development module consist of?
- 3 hours of training regarding ELA and Visual Art strategies to support SWD learning

Who can sign up for the EquAALS professional development module?
- TK-8th grade credentialed teachers in Stanislaus County
- TK-8th grade Special Education teachers
- TK-8th grade teachers of SWD; this is ALL teachers since all teach SWD (general education, language teachers, arts teachers, PE teachers etc.)

What does the EquAALS professional development cost?
- Nothing; this is a free service for teachers of SWD in Stanislaus County

Is there a stipend for participating teachers?
- A $200 credit is available for participating teachers who complete the module and the online chats

When and where does the EquAALS professional development module take place? 
- After school hours at Stanislaus COE
- Depending on the district, during school hours as part of existing PD time

How many times will the EquAALS professional development module be offered?

Applications

The Gallo Center for the Art s is a state-of-the-art performing arts complex in downtown Modesto. The Gallo Center for the Arts is the focus of arts, entertainment, multicultural programming and social activities for the Central Valley for generations to come. The Gallo Center for the Arts offers four unique programs supporting arts education learning experiences for Region 6 students: Pathways to Creativity, Gallo Center Youth Academy (GCYA), YES Company, and Creation Station Summer Camp.

Gallo Center Youth Academy

The Gallo Center Youth Academy at the Gallo Center for the Arts provides year-round performing arts experiences for youth grades K-6. GCYA features twice weekly, hour-long, sessions exploring acting, musical theater, playwriting, singing, composition and much more. Student performance showcases will be held twice a year (December and May) in the Foster Family Theater for family and friends.

YES Company

The Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) and the Gallo Center for the Arts have entered into an agreement that will see the performing arts venue assume management responsibilities and artistic direction for YES Company.  Cortney Hurst, Director of Arts Education for the Gallo Center, and Tiffany Davis, Arts Education Manager, will lead the new venture.

Founded by SCOE in 1992, YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) Company offers a variety of programs that will now be managed by the Gallo Center as part of an expanding, year-round arts education initiative of the performing arts venue.  YES Company’s signature offering is a nine-week summer program that immerses young people grades 7-12 in a pre-professional theater experience. Open auditions lead to an intense rehearsal period and culminate with seven performances of a Broadway-type production over the span of two weekends at the Gallo Center.

The Gallo Center will operate YES Company with partial funding by the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County, which has traditionally furnished support for the organization’s staffing, production and equipment needs, and tuition grants for deserving students.

Overview

Stanislaus County Office of Education is a 2018 recipient of a $1.4 million U.S. Department of Education Professional Development for Arts Educators (PDAE) grant. "The program specifically supports the implementation of high-quality model professional development programs for educators of K-12 students" (source). Stanislaus County Office of Education is proud to partner with the Stanislaus Union Unified School District for the PDAE grant. Stanislaus County Office of education is developing and deploying a three-year model of rigorous art integration professional development with an emphasis on English Language Arts, Visual Art, and Media Arts, called iMEDIA. The scope of the iMEDIA project encompasses professional development, providing support deploying art units alongside participating educators, and creating a mobile art assessment tool that empowers educators to assess student art.
