Foothill Horizons Outdoor School will host an Open House this Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at their Sonora site(21925 Lyons Bald Mountain Road, Sonora).  This free event will include activities for the kids, snacks, as well as tours of the site.

Parents can come up to see what their sixth graders will be experiencing through tours of the facility. The Open House will provide families the time to expand their own understanding and appreciation for Outdoor Education and the opportunities it has for their children.

Operated by the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE), Foothill Horizons is a California Department of Education and California Outdoor School Association certified residential outdoor school in the foothills of the central Sierra.  This is an opportunity for parents to evaluate Foothill Horizons as a place to send their children to summer camp during the summer of 2020.  Foothill staff will take participants on tours of the facilities and answer questions regarding curriculum, health care, meals and supervision. Foothill Horizons is also available for rental. Visit during the open house to learn more about renting the site for weddings, parties, retreats and more.

Approximately 7,000 students visit Foothill Horizons each school year.  According to Director Jessica Hewitt, outdoor education provides a comprehensive educational program for children while nurturing an appreciation for the natural environment.  During their stay, students participate in curriculum based on the science standards, including classes in ecology, geology, conservation, discovery techniques, and Me-Wuk Indian culture.  Students also enjoy field trips to a local cavern and to a Giant Sequoia grove.
