SCOE Announces Naming Opportunity for its New Downtown Location
The Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) is currently seeking community input to name its new downtown office. Last year, SCOE purchased the building (located at 1325 H Street) that formerly housed The Modesto Bee newspaper staff and printing presses. It is currently being renovated to accommodate the Child & Family Services Division and the Educational Options Division of the county office. Already in operation in the northern portion of the building is VOLT (Valley Occupational Learning and Technical) Institute, which is running certification programs for in-demand positions with local employers. SCOE also has career-technical education programs in the building, such as the Northern California Construction Trades program. Future plans include a child care center that will allow parents who come into the building to leave their children in a safe environment, while interacting with staff or participating in programs on site. The Board of Trustees for SCOE has policy around the naming of buildings. Board Policy 7310 states that “buildings, grounds, and facilities” may be named in recognition of:
- Individuals, living or deceased, and entities that have made outstanding contributions, including financial contributions, to the school community
- Individuals, living or deceased, who have made contributions of statewide, national or worldwide significance
- The geographic area in which the school or building is located
- The theme or focus of the school program or programs
As per the same policy, the SCOE Board “encourages community participation in the process of selecting names.” To manage this process, a “citizen advisory committee” has been “appointed to review name suggestions and submit recommendations for the Board’s consideration.”
Community members have until October 23, 2018, at midnight to submit name suggestions to the Citizen Advisory Committee.
The Stanislaus County Board of Education is scheduled to review recommendations at its November 13, 2018, Board Meeting.
