
Top Spellers Compete at County Spelling Championship

The top two spelling champions in the Junior High Spelling Championship were Vangogh Tran from Turlock Junior High and Deetya Thogarucheeti from Prescott Junior High. Vangogh and Deetya will represent Stanislaus County at the state competition in Stockton on May 13, 2023. An alternate winner, Layla Ayala from Creekside Middle School, will attend the state competition if Vangogh or Deetya cannot represent Stanislaus County.
Top spellers from area schools competed in the Stanislaus County Junior High Spelling Championship on December 7, 2022. The Junior High Spelling Championship, sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, is for students in grades 7-8. The Junior High Spelling Championship occurred at the Martin G. Petersen Event Center in Modesto. Scott Kuykendall, County Superintendent of Schools, served as the Spelling Master and volunteers from each school site served as proctors.
The following 15 Stanislaus County schools participated in the Junior High Spelling Championship: Connecting Waters Charter, Creekside, Hanshaw, Hart-Ransom, Hickman, La Loma, Oakdale, Our Lady of Fatima, Paradise, Prescott, Riverbank Language Academy, St. Stanislaus, Spratling, Turlock and Yolo.
