Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers
Dear parents, families and educators,
High profile acts of violence, particularly in schools, can confuse and frighten children who may feel in danger or worry that their friends or loved-ones are at risk. They will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school personnel can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security and talking with them about their fears.

The department of Student Support Services provides referrals, coordinates services, and develops programs that support the continual growth and development of children, families, and schools in improving educational achievement for all students. Prevention and intervention support services are provided through collaboration and cooperation with interagency partners and private agencies within Stanislaus County. The department’s purpose is to coordinate support services and programs designed to educate the whole child cognitively, emotionally, and socially so that each student becomes a productive citizen, prepared to live and work in our global society.
Student Support Advocates
Student Support Advocates, working at SCOE Alternative Education and Charter school sites, facilitate and monitor support services to students and families with various issues relating to academic success, including physical health, poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, mental health and related issues. Student Support Advocates can provide resources and referrals for pregnant/parenting teens, foster care and help for students struggling with homelessness. They work with classroom teachers, support staff and administrators to develop and implement goals for students and monitor progress toward success.
