MISSION STATEMENT:

The Stanislaus County Office of Education's Evidence has shown that by adopting the Whole Child approach to teaching and learning, implementing Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Responsive Teaching, and applying both Implementation and Improvement Science for continuous improvement, the Multi-Tiered System of Support framework can lay the foundation for statewide system of support. Team is dedicated to efficiently and empathetically providing sustainable, evidence-based, collaborative training, coaching, and support; addressing mental health, social, emotional, and behavioral needs to help equip the school-wide leadership teams in supporting the whole child and all stakeholders.

According to the leading organization in Social Emotional Learning, the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. Social Emotional Learning is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions."

Integrating Social Emotional Learning means that educators are providing students with the opportunity to develop and strengthen their five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship and responsible decision-making skills.

More on the Five Core Competencies

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges. Like many similar frameworks, the California Social and Emotional Learning’s integrated framework promotes intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive competence. There are five core competencies that can be taught in many ways across many settings.

Defining and quantifying Social and Emotional Learning is a difficult task. Determining what and how to teach Social and Emotional Learning can be even more of a daunting task. Utilizing the definitions set forth by the five Core Competencies, educators can move from a theoretical understanding of Social and Emotional Learning to one of practical application.
