Top spellers from area schools competed in the Stanislaus County Junior High Spelling Championship on December 7 & 8, 2021.  The Junior High Spelling Championship, sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, is for students in grades 7-8. The contestants competed in the Qualifying Round on December 7, 2021, virtually.  The top spellers advanced to the Competition Round, which was held the following night at the Martin G. Petersen Event Center in Modesto. Chris Dempsey, a La Loma Junior High School educator, served as the Spelling Master, and volunteers from each school site served as proctors.

The following 14 Stanislaus County schools participated in the Junior High Spelling Championship: Connecting Waters Charter, Creekside, Hanshaw, Hart-Ransom, Hickman, Oakdale, Our Lady of Fatima, Prescott, Riverbank Language Academy, Ross, Sacred Heart, Spratling, Turlock,and Yolo.

The top two spelling champions in the Junior High Spelling Championship were Vangogh Tran from Turlock Junior High and Deetya Thogarucheeti from Prescott Junior High.  The third-place speller was Sabrina Toor, also from Prescott Junior High. 
Some words the champions spelled correctly were: febrifuge, aeroneurosis, rambunctious, and abeyance.
