We live in a society that celebrates burning the midnight oil and vilifies the over-sleeper. We walk through life in a constant state of sleep deprivation. In just the past 10 years, scientists have been postulating that sleep does much more than simply rest and rejuvenate our bodies. Sleep scientists now theorize that our brains are hard at work completing a variety of tasks, many still unknown. Chronic lack of sleep is related to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, and ADD. It has recently been identified as a player in Alzheimer’s and dementia. Individuals with autism and Down Syndrome experience atypical sleep patterns that may effect learning and mood.
Target audience: Professionals and individuals interested in how sleep may affect students, families and consumers or anyone who sleeps or struggles with sleep.
